START OVER - Laura Cortes

Imagine leaving behind everything you've ever known: the sights, sounds, tastes and even the comforting embrace of loved ones. You arrive in a new country brimming with excitement and a yearning for growth and opportunity. But in the midst of this excitement is the reality of starting from scratch, facing a language barrier that seems insurmountable. This is a story we immigrants face and one that resonates with countless people who have embarked on a new chapter of their lives in a foreign country. This story is about the challenges, hopes and dreams of immigrant women and men, who face obstacles such as language barriers as they struggle to carve out a better future in Canada.

I am one such woman, determined to navigate the complexities of a foreign culture while pursuing my career aspirations. With extensive work experience, I come to Canada eager to contribute to the diversity of this great nation. However, even with a strong academic background and an unwavering commitment to excellence, the journey has not been without its trials. Language, a vital medium for communication and connection, often acts as a formidable barrier. Every day I feel like I am in a battle, struggling to convey my thoughts, ideas and ambitions effectively.

Despite these challenges, I refuse to let my dreams fade away. I am currently completing my Business Administration program, specializing in Human Resources. My job search started a few days ago and now I see that the real challenge starts here. And I decided to write this because migrant women, like me, often possess a tenacity born out of necessity. We are steadfast in our pursuit of success, driven by an unwavering determination to break down the barriers placed in front of us. We strive to prove our worth, not only to the world but to ourselves.

Behind every struggle is a reservoir of untapped potential, waiting to be unleashed. We bring with us a unique perspective, a rich tapestry of experiences and a deep appreciation for the opportunities we have been given. Our passion, resilience and capacity for growth are unrivalled. We bring our illusions and our energy.

So I would love for companies and organizations in Canada to look beyond a strong accent or a flaw in pronunciation or grammar, I hope they will recognize the immense value that migrant women bring. Embrace the diversity of thought and experience that we offer, because it is through this inclusiveness that true progress is achieved.

To my fellow migrant women, I say this: our journey may be arduous and our path may not be clear at times, but let us stand tall and proud. Let us not let some circumstances define us, because we should really be defined by our resilience, our determination and our unwavering spirit and the contribution we make to society not only as professionals.
